Number of children facing execution in Iran DOUBLED to 68

According to a recent report submitted to Iran’s Parliament 41 children are facing executions in Iran. Comparing the published names with the list of the Stop Child Executions Campaign: THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN FACING EXECUTION IN IRAN IS ABOUT 68. The added names obtained from the newly published official list is of great new concern to the SCE campaign as the number of children facing executions in Iran has now doubled the 34 that was previously published by SCE campaign. This is lieu of the fact that Iran has also already executed at least two children in the year 2007.

After the successful campaign which resulted in release of Nazanin Fatehi in January 2007, who was sentenced to death for self defense in a rape attempt; it was presumed that there was only one more girl (Delara Darabi 17) on the executions row, however last month Stop Child Executions Campaign reported another girl who has been on the execution row for the past 18 years. SOGHRA NAJAF-POUR who is being kept in the same prison as DELARA DARABI in the city of Rasht was sentenced to death for an alleged murder when she was 13 years old. According to the new list there seem be another female NAZBIBI ATASHBEJAN who is facing execution for alleged drug dealing at the age of 16. Nazbibi was arrested in May 2005 and sentenced to death in April 2006 in the Western City of Semnan, in Khoram-Abad province of Iran

According to the new list, the youngest child facing execution is AHMAD NOROUZI who was sentenced to death 2 years ago for alleged drug dealing at the age of 12 . Ahmad was arrested 3 years ago and is now 15 years old.

On June 16, 2007 SCE Campaign published the list of the 41 children with their information in Persian. Stop Child Executions Campaign will publish more detail about each child in English soon. SCE Campaign also submitted the detailed list to Amnesty International. The list of 41 children was included in a report to the Iranian Parliament which was prepared by the same person who had submitted the bill under review by Iranian Parliament to change the children penal laws in Iran. The report first appeared in an article published by Emadeddin Baghi the founder of the Association for the Defense of Prisoners’ Rights in Iran.

Stop Child Executions Campaign strongly condemns Iran’s violation of International laws. Iran remains to be the only country in the world with such an extensive list of children facing execution. Nazanin Afshin-Jam and Stop Child Executions are extremely concerned about the status of these children as two were already executed in Iran this year.

To sign the petition to stop child executions in Iran please visit: www.stopchildexecutions.com . The petition has been signed by many internationally known human rights activists , parliament members in Sweden, Norway, Canada and many people worldwide. For more information visit SCE page on wikipedia. The petition demands the Iranian leaders to :

– Provide a complete list of all individuals under the age of 18 who are sentenced to death.
– Immediately halt executions and prevent any further application of such penalties against child offenders.
– Take immediate measures to permanently abolish the death penalty for all child offenders in accordance with Iran’s obligations as a state party to the ICCPR and the CRC.

Petition also urges The United Nations, The United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights and The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to:

– Demand that the Iranian government immediately comply with its international obligations as defined by ICCPR and CRC

On February 27, 2007 more than 34 members of European Parliament also signed a resolution to Stop Child Executions in Iran.
